“There’s a narrative in the fabrication of things.” —Martin Puryear
Pop the champagne for Martin Puryear: The 77-year-old sculptor was just selected to represent the United States at the 58th Venice Biennale, in 2019. Puryear’s abstract work has graced a number of galleries and public spaces, including his monumental “Big Bling” (2016) at Madison Square Park in New York. (Notably, the deputy director and senior curator at the Madison Square Park Conservancy, Brooke Kamin Rapaport, is commissioning and curating the U.S. exhibition at the Biennale). Here’s a video from Art21 about the process and philosophy behind “Big Bling”—perhaps a taste of what’s to come.
