“I make paintings that people perceive often as being very social or political. But for the most part, they’re all very personal. Everything stems from my relationship to a situation, to a narrative, to a story.” —Titus Kaphar
Congratulations to Titus Kaphar, one of three visual artists awarded with a 2018 MacArthur Foundation Fellowship “Genius” award. Kaphar is an artist working primarily in painting whose work highlights the lack of representation of people of color in the canon of Western art with works that deconstruct the literal and visual structure of the artwork. He is currently the subject of a two-person exhibition, with Ken Gonzalez-Day, at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. In this video, the MacArthur Foundation introduces us.
UPDATE, JUNE 5, 2020: Congratulations to Kaphar on his selection to create the cover image for Time magazine’s George Floyd issue. See the cover and read his accompanying statement here.
